The book of Proverbs is not easy to read or study. A first impression is that it is an anthology, a book to be sampled, not read straight through. This is how it is most often used—like a coffee-table book, to be dipped into for the tidbits that fall from its pages. But what in reality is it? How did this book come to be? Proverbs is a book of poems—not proverbs in the traditional sense. We usually think of a “proverb” as a short, pithy saying.
